De Roodwitten uit Scarborough.
Als toerisme journalist en een passie voor RAFC bezocht ik midden september Scarborough in het Engelse North Yorkshire. De lokale ploeg, Scarborough Athletic Football Club( SAFC) speelt ook in rood witte uitrusting en begon dit seizoen in een splinternieuw stadion. Alvorens iemand vlug naar de huidige League Tables gaat kijken , zij spelen niet in de top 4 competities in Engeland. Ook nog niet in de daarop volgende National League. Neen je vind ze nog een stapje lager in de Evo-Stik Northern League. De club bestaat nog maar sinds juni 2007 , toen ze werd opgericht deels door een supportersgroep van de ten ziele gegane Scarborough F.C. Bij dit team vond ik nog een Antwerp connectie. Aanvaller Bimbo Fatokun speelde voor onze Reds van 1995 tot 2002 en werd dan getransfereerd naar de toenmalige Scarborough ploeg waar hij een seizoen verbleef.
Het huidige stadion maakt deel uit van een Leisure Village, met een sporthal , fitnesscenter en een 25 meter Olympisch zwembad. Het terrein zelf heeft kunstgras en wordt ook voor andere sporten gebruikt. Dit alles werd op zeer korte termijn verwezenlijkt dankzij de stad Scarborough zelf en de hulp van de Universiteit. Normaal is het gemiddeld aantal toeschouwers 500. Op zaterdag 16 september kwamen er echter 932 opdagen. Reden ? Die dag speelde S.A.F.C een 2nd Qualifying Round in The Emirates F.A. Cup , de weg naar Wembley. Deze begin rondes zijn zeer belangrijk voor teams in de lagere regio. Tijdens ons gesprek met Trevor Bull , de voorzitter, vernamen we dat winst in deze ronde namelijk 4.500£ opbrengt , prijzengeld geschonken door The F.A. Een ronde verder is dit al 7.500£ . De ultieme droom van deze teams is nog twee rondjes verder gaan en dan automatisch een team uit de top 4 Leagues treffen.
S.A.F.C. speelde de wedstrijd tegen Sunderland RCA en won met 2-0. Geen dik betaalde buitenlandse spelers in deze wedstrijd. De meesten hebben allemaal nog een job van politieman tot verzekeringsagent. Wat we zagen was het oeroude Britse voetbal met 200% inzet , weinig techniek , vele hoge ballen en een gezellige sfeer in het knusse stadion. Als Antwerp fans genoten we natuurlijk van extra attentie , fan verbroedering met onze wederzijdse rood-witte sjaals, en als zitje kregen mijn vrouw en ik de zeteltjes van de twee “home directors “. Zij liepen beiden liever wat rond om hun team aan te moedigen. Nog het vermelden waard was de goed georganiseerde catering , waar de warme koffie meer dan welkom was..
Ik ga deze Britse Reds zeker nog volgen hoor.
The reds from Scarborough.

Before someone at home will have a quick look at the current League Tables, yes you are right , they do not play in the top 4 League Divisions in England. Neither you will find them in The National League. No , they are one step down in the Evo-Stik Northern League. The current club is rather young and dates from June 2007 .After the liquidation of Scarborough F.C , a new club saw the light with help from the local town and the supporters group.. After some research I found even an Antwerp connection. Forward Bimbo Fatokun played for our reds from 1995 tot 2002 and was transferred afterwards tot he then Scarborough FC team where he stayed for one season.
The current ground is part of The Leisure Village, an indoor arena ( all purpose), a fitness centre and a 25 m. Olympic swimming pool. The football ground has a kind of artificial grass cover and can also be used for different other sports.. The construction was finished in a very satisfying short period with help from Scarborough Town and the University. The normal attendance is around 500. On Saturday 16 September, the day of our visit, a total of 932 people were at the ground. Why? That day S.A.F.C played a 2nd Qualifying Round in The Emirates F.A. Cup , the way to Wembley. The early rounds are very important for teams in the lower divisions. When talking with Trevor Bull , the chairman ( it was also his birthday), we learned that a win in this round will gain the club a bonus of 4.500£ , straight from The F.A. A win in the next round and the bonus is already 7.500£ . The ultimate dream for teams is going for another two rounds and at that point they can go for the jackpot against a team from the top 4 Leagues.
S.A.F.C. played this cup tie against Sunderland RCA and won 2-0. No big earners from abroad on the pitch but only local lads. Probably all have still a job from maybe policeman to insurance broker?. We saw a much entertaining game , for me the “old school English football” with 200% devotion, not to much technical , a lot of high balls and mostly a very pleasant and sociable ambiance in a cosy ground. As Antwerp supporters we loved the extra attention for us , a bit of fraternizing with our mutual scarfs, and my wife and I appreciated it very much to sit in the seats of the home directors . Also to mention was the well organised catering where we were able to have a warm coffee , something we always miss at RAFC catering , were there are no hot drinks available.
We will certainly follow the Scarborough Reds in the future!
